Learn self-care strategies based on Alexander technique principles for care partners of people living with dementia. Build resilience for the physical and emotional challenges of long term caregiving.  This course is free for caregivers of people living with Alzheimer's disease or related dementias. Enjoy a supportive group setting to learn skills and strategies based on Alexander technique (AT) to manage the many daily physical and emotional challenges that Parkinson's brings into your lives. The course is focused on the needs of the caregiver, independent of their care receiver.

This evidence-based program teaches you skills to manage the many physical and emotional demands of long-term caregiving for someone with dementia, as well as how to effectively cue loved ones to use the Alexander technique principles in their daily life. The program consists of a group class meeting for 90 minutes once a week for 10 weeks. (NOTE: The first and last classes meet for two hours. )

Alexander technique (AT) is a well-established approach for skillfully managing stressful circumstances. AT training has also been found to be effective in reducing physical symptoms such as chronic neck and back pain — common complaints for care partners — and it has been demonstrated that AT training has long-term retention of benefits.

The Poise Project® is a nonprofit with the mission of maintaining poise and personal growth throughout all stages and challenges of life using the principles of Alexander technique (AT). We design and deliver Alexander-based programs that give people greater confidence to manage their life challenges and increase their independence and quality of life.

Our programs for care partners help them gain skills to manage the physical and emotional demands of long term caregiving, as well as to cue their loved ones for using the AT principles in their daily life, while also fostering a supportive community with one another.

"Partnering with Poise" is a program of The Poise Project® and was developed as a research project through the University of Idaho with support from two Parkinson's Foundation Moving Day® grants.
